According to a report by The Royal Caribbean Blog, a young boy sailing aboard Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas nearly drowned today after being found unconsciousness in one of the ship’s main swimming pools.
The young boy was reportedly found at the bottom of one of the ship’s main Lido pools, in an conscious state. Upon his discovery, the ship’s medical team responded and administered care until additional medical services arrived via helicopter. The young boy was airlifted off of the ship and flown to a hospital in nearby France.
The condition of the boy is currently known to be serious. No additional information is currently available.
The Independence of the Seas is currently sailing on a six night western European sailing.
Over the past few months, a number of similar incidents aboard various cruise ships have ignited debate over the role of lifeguards on the Lido deck. Currently, only one major cruise line employs lifeguards, Disney Cruise Line.

Parents were where again? Too many people distracted by shiny things forget their most important and precious cargo. Its not some one else’s responsibility to look after them. SMH.
Yes to that, come on parents don’t leave your brains at home, YOUR children are YOUR responsibility!
I cannot even begin to tell you how many cruises I’ve been on with children in the pool and not a parent in sight. Neither the parents nor the cruise line can be bothered. Very annoying because I end up watching someone else’s kid š
Been on independence of the Seas 3 times and Adventure once, wonderful ship’s but do think lifeguards are a must around the kids pool area. They have a guy handing out the free ice cream at the self service ice cream machine on deck 11 all day, So would it really hurt Royal Caribbean to employ a lifeguard?
We were on Independence when this happened in Gibraltar in May 2011, the Captain and crew were fantastic getting the ship away from danger so quickly. Sadly the man welding on the waste oil tank died
