Viking Ocean Cruises, the ocean going sister line to the world’s largest river cruise line, Viking River, is set to introduce a truly unique onboard experience aboard their soon to be newest ship, Viking Sky.
Viking is a cruise line known to incorporate rich viking history into their onboard experience, featuring dedicated spaces to host viking heritage museums and lectures on the history of the world’s first explorers. For Viking Sky, the line is looking to offer a truly authentic Viking experience in the form of a new onboard activity.
Known as Viking Oar, the new onboard activity will offer guests the chance to try their hand at rowing with traditional viking oars, once used to propel longships during the Viking Age. Viking Oar offers a unique duel advantage to the guest and the ship, offering guests a true cultural experience reminiscent of the early Norsemen, while also assisting with the ship’s propulsion. For some, the new activity can even serve as a daily workout regiment between traditional Norwegian waffles at Mamsen’s in the morning and the unique culinary creations at Chef’s Table for dinner.
“We are truly excited to bring this traditional Viking Age experience to our guests aboard Viking Sky,” said Viking Cruise’s spoksesperson Cnut the Great. “We think, alongside Viking’s immersive onboard museums and seminars, Viking Oar will truly immerse our guests in the age of vikings, while also reducing our need to rely so heavily on motorized propulsion. Row! Row! Starboard! Row!”
According to sources at Fincantieri, the shipyard was hoping the line would be willing to install more oars for the Viking Oar experience, eliminating the need for traditional mechanized propulsion. Viking, in the interest of its guests, declined to opt for “all manpower propulsion.”
The Viking Oar experience is available for all guests on a complimentary basis and will compliment Viking’s impressive complimentary offerings, including, WiFi, laundry service, beer and wine during lunch and dinner, shore excursions, and premium dining.
Viking Sky is expected to launch later this year, will be the third ship for Viking Ocean’s growing fleet. The ship will feature similar amenities and spaces as her sisters, Viking Star and Viking Sea, including the Aquavit Terrace, the Wintergarden, a true infinity pool at her stern, and the dedication of a truly outstanding crew.
