Royal Princess Loses Power In The Mediterranean

(4:50 pm ET 9/24) According to Princess Cruises, the Royal Princess is currently undergoing maintenance and will be able to sail her next cruise, on 9/27 from Barcelona. Here is the official statement from Princess:

“Today Royal Princess remains in Naples as passengers continue to disembark the ship and travel home.  We have appreciated our passengers’ patience and understanding as they’ve waited to receive their onward travel details being arranged by our shore team.  Again, we are sincerely sorry for this unexpected disruption to their vacation.

After a technical assessment of the repairs required, we are pleased to report that the next cruise, voyage 1329 departing this Friday, is planned to operate as scheduled from Barcelona.  The repairs will be made as the ship sails from Naples to Barcelona.

We look forward to welcoming our passengers onboard Royal Princess on Friday.  The ship will depart at 7 pm as scheduled. The next cruise is a 12-day Mediterranean sailing ending in Venice.”

(6:50 am ET 9/23) Princess Cruises has announced that the current sailing of the Royal Princess will be cancelled upon arrival in Naples. In addition to a full refund and a 25% discount on a future cruise, all guests currently sailing aboard the Royal Princess will be flown home later this week. It is expected that guests will remain aboard the Royal Princess until at least Wednesday morning. Engineers will meet the ship in Naples to carry out necessary repairs to return the ship to a normal operating capacity. At this time, it is not known whether the Royal Princess’ next cruise will be delayed.

(5:50 pm ET) Princess Cruises, in a response to a post on their Facebook page, has confirmed that power has been restored aboard the Royal Princess. According to the post, the Royal Princess is currently en-route to Naples, Italy.

(2:00 pm ET ) According to initial reports, Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess has lost power while sailing in the Mediterranean Sea.

The ship was sailing between Mykonos and Naples when the power failure occurred. At this time, it is known that emergency generators are keeping critical guest services, such as toilets, available.

Here is an official statement from Princess Cruises regarding the current situation:

“Today at approximately 1:30 pm local time, Royal Princess experienced a power outage. Power is currently in the process of being restored, and in the meantime an emergency backup generator has been used to provide essential services, such as toilets. The ship is not in any danger, and the Captain has been keeping passengers regularly informed about the situation. The ship is currently on the seventh day of a 12-day Mediterranean cruise that departed Venice on September 15. There are 3,594 passengers and 1,336 crew members onboard.”

Crew members are currently attempting to restore power to the ship. At this time, the Captain of the ship is keeping passengers informed of the situation.

OMG…. this would be a BRAND NEW SHIP! We have had all 7 of our cruises on Princess. You have to wonder what IN THE HELL is going on with the cruise industry. Carnival is the parent company of Princess.

Carnival is not the parent company they are different cruise lines and companies

Carnival Corporation owns the majority stake; however as part of Carnival Corps acquisition of P&O Princess Cruises in 2002 it was agreed that P&O Princess would be relisted as Carnival plc in London, remaining a separate company with a predominantly British shareholder body and largely retaining the P&O Princess executive team

Carnival Corporation owns Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Cunard, Aida, P&O Cruises (UK), P&O Cruises (Australia), Costa, Seabourn, Princess Cruises and Iberocruceros.

It doesn’t matter whether the ship is brand new or not, or who the parents companies are, the fact of the matter is ships are not invincible, and on occasion they come across some hitches. As stated the ship was not in any danger and only out of power for a few hours. The only thing this has caused is a little inconvenience. In the grand scheme of things no one was hurt and no ones life was threatened and better still no fatalities.
Cars, Planes and Trains all have problems every day its not just ships.

You’re preaching to the choir. On the other hand, it DOES seem like there have been several nasty events on cruise ships in the last year. And of COURSE it matters what the age of the ship is… I for one, would be upset if my 2 week Med Cruise, had been disturbed in ANY way. They get enough money from passengers to make sure everything is PERFECT.

I’ve sailed the world on Princess….and 29 other Princess cruises. I’m sure they are taking EXCELLENT care of the passengers and things will be “right” very soon

Sheesh. Can I have your job?? Very nice though, and it looks like they are handling the situation well.

I have sailed the world with Princess…and 29 other Princess cruises. I’m sure that they are taking EXCELLENT care of the passengers and that things will be “right” soon

They’re not taking any chances of bad PR with this; full refunds plus 25% discount for a future cruise.

This is the way a cruise line should deal with problems.

To pack or unpack- that is the question- I’m scheduled to leave New York with my husband and another couple tomorrow nite for Friday’s cruise out of Barcelona on the Princess Royal. While I realize nothing is guaranteed and events do happen while on route, what is aggravating is the lack on imformation on alternate options. My ship is disabled at this point- it isn’t even being looked at until back in port tomorrow (Wednesday). What is the chance it will be completely ready to sail on Friday? Saturday? Sunday? etc. The present passengers are getting a full refund and a future credit- I’m walking into their continuing problem with no info and the reality of a completely different, very expensive pre-paid vacation which I didn’t sign up for. While I have every expectation Princess will look after their passengers with regard to safety, my 40th wedding anniversary cruise from Barcelona to Istanbul is in real jeopardy. And Princess has not even had the courtesy of letting me know it’s current status- I had to find it out on the news. That’s shameful and not reassuring. Will let you know if I get any feedback from them today. .
