River Cruising Grows Up, 2 Ocean Going Vessels Planned for Viking Ocean

Earlier this month, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Fincantieri Shipyards and Viking Ocean Cruises to construct two luxury ocean-going vessels, in laymen’s terms…two luxury cruise ships.

The two ships will both weigh 45,000 tons and carry 998 guests in 499 cabins. No actual construction agreement has been signed yet, but it is expected to be signed within the next few weeks. An option for a third ship is available to Viking Ocean, but they have not made it public yet whether or not they will exercise the option.

Torstein Hagen, founder and CEO of Viking Ocean Cruises, commented on the deal syaing: “We are very excited to be working with Fincantieri.  We started Viking with the goal of bringing the destination back to cruising and we are excited to bring this same destination commitment back to ocean cruising. The ship designed by Ficantieri has a fresh and innovative design well suited to our commitment to destination cruising”.

The first ship will enter service in late 2014 and the second one in late 2015. No itineraries have been been made public yet, but knowing Viking River Cruises, they will be great. By the way, Viking Ocean Cruises is a sister cruise line to Viking River Cruises.
