Puerto Rico Plans For Pier Expansion

The Governor of Puerto Rico recently announced plans to extend one of the main pier’s located in Old San Juan to accommodate newer, larger cruise ships. Currently, the piers located in Old San Juan are unable to handle ships with passenger numbers around 6,000 and up.

Pier 3 will be expanded by 182 feet, allowing the pier to handle ships of longer lengths. In addition to the pier expansion, the port is planning on building a new baggage inspection office for the pier.

The new pier is scheduled to be operational for its first visit from a mega cruise ship, Quantum of the Seas, which is scheduled to call in San Juan on December 4, 2014. The arrival of the Oasis of the Seas will mark the first time a ship of her size has called in San Juan.
