P&O to Make Tipping Mandatory on All Cruises

From April 2012, P&O Cruises will replace its traditional method of tipping — passengers distributing envelopes to crewmembers at the end of the cruise — with fixed-rate tipping, automatically added to passenger bills at the rate of £3.10 per person, per day.

According to P&O’s Managing Director Carol Marlow, the policy is aimed at reducing “awkwardness and confusion” for passengers over the subject of tipping while helping to ensure gratuity levels for staff stay consistent. The tips will cover both dining staff and cabin stewards.

The fixed rate of £3.10 per day is the same rate the line has currently set as its suggested daily rate for tipping. This rate, however, does not include the automatic service charge of £1.60 per person, per day for passengers who choose Freedom Dining on Oceana, Ventura and Azura.
