Earlier today, Norwegian Cruise Line reported on their Facebook page that the Norwegian Star rescued 6 stranded sailors from the Atlantic Ocean while on her way to Bermuda.
The Norwegian Star’s Captain Kenneth Harstrom received a call from the US Coast Guard notifying them that a small yacht, the Avenir, had been disabled in the ocean after losing its rudder. The Captain of the Norwegian Star quickly diverted the Star from its planned route and sped to the scene of the disabled yacht.
Upon arrival, the Norwegian Star quickly brought the 6 sailors on board and gave them a medical examination, food, and water.
The Norwegian Star is currently sailing a 7 night Bermuda cruise from New York City to King’s Wharf Bermuda. As of right now, there is no word on how the sailors will be brought back home, but will most likely be flown home once they dock in Bermuda tomorrow morning.
Thankfully Captain Harstrom made the right decision to help the stranded sailors just as the Enchantment of the Seas had done earlier this month. The cruise industry came under harsh scrutiny earlier in the year after the Star Princess ignored 3 stranded fishermen, 2 of which later died of starvation and dehydration.
Great work Norwegian!
