MSC Poesia Runs Aground In Bahamas

On January 7th, the MSC Poesia ran aground on a reef just off of Grand Bahama Island. She was stuck until about 6:00pm when high tide freed her from the reef. It wasn’t all bad though as passengers were able to return to the island while “reefed” via tenders. When high tide finally came in it took 4 tugs to push her off of the reef, with a 5th standing by. The video below captures the incident with commentary. Damage to the reef will be evaluated later today.

Excellent and informative reporting! I was on Poesia for a whole year from Oct 9/2010 to Oct 15/2011 and will be again beginning Feb 13 2012. With today’s sophisticated equipment I just don’t understand how groundings like this or the much worse Costa one can happen. There must be human failings involved. Egon L.
