Cruising Through a Hurricane (Videos)

Hopefully you haven’t had the misfortune of cruising through a hurricane, but I thought it would be interesting to see what it is like to experience that kind of storm while on a cruise ship. So, I searched around YouTube to bring you my favorite videos from various cruisers who cruised through Hurricane Sandy this past week. Enjoy!

1) Disney Fantasy – Check out the damage to the gift shops. Crew members even ask the passenger to return to his cabin for his own safety.

2) Disney Fantasy again – This video is rather short, but gives you a good view of the violent waves produced by Sandy.

3) Carnival Fascination – Look at those waves!

4) Disney Fantasy once more – Did you hear that?

Bonus: Disney Fantasy. Does it look windy to you?

We were on “The Brilliance of the Seas” when it was hit by hurricane force winds in the Mediterranean in Dec., 2010. The ship was trying to enter the port of Alexandria, Egypt at slow speed when winds over 100 mph hit the ship broadside. The ship listed about 30 degrees at least twice. I was told it caused $ 1 Million worth of damage. See my short video of the aftermath here:

.The crew did a great job helping passengers, making some repairs and feeding us when the kitchens were damaged. Everyone got a refund for the entire cruise.

Hi John,
I just checked out the video, that’s insane. I remember seeing this on the news back then. I’m hoping you weren’t injured during the cruise.

I sailed through a hurricane on my very first night at sea, aboard RC’s Rhapsody of the Seas, out of Galveston. My wife made me promise to stay inside….so of course, as soon as she was asleep I went directly to the top deck and practically lashed myself to the railing up at the bow. It was just about the most fun I ever had. Winds were 80-100 mph, thirty foot waves, and the ship was porpoising in the water. It was just about the most fun I ever had. But the next morning there were a lot of green-looking people at breakfast. 🙂

That’s sounds awesome, what a thrill! I’m assuming you’re wife doesn’t know about this? 🙂
